In Senegal, the conventional crop intensification model has proven inadequate, jeopardizing livelihoods, degrading soils, contributing to biodiversity loss, and aggravating the effects of climate change. Peanut monocropping has led to adverse environmental and economic impacts. The Ndankou and Patte Forests, despite successful past management, face threats such as encroaching peanut farming and reduced forest cover.

The Senegal program seeks to restore as much of the 30,000 hectares of degraded land surrounding the forests as possible, starting with 6,000 farming families each with one hectare each. By rehabilitating degraded lands, implementing sustainable practices, and fostering community ownership, the program aims to contribute to the long-term richness and sustainability of the Gambia River Watershed.

Empowering Women

Haiti’s women are the heart of its communities and economy, leading nearly half of households and driving local industries like agriculture and commerce. Yet, they continue to face significant inequality.

Supporting Women, Strengthening Communities

Fanm Limye Association has been empowering women in Haiti since 2013. Through the Women Illuminated cooperative, 32 beekeeping groups have been established in the West and Nippes Departments, creating new opportunities for leadership and economic growth.

Sustainable Solutions for People and the Planet

Pollinator Agroforestry

Their program combines agroforestry and honey production to transform Haiti’s vulnerable landscapes. By planting trees like coconut, mango, and avocado alongside crops, they promote biodiversity, support pollinators, and strengthen local ecosystems.

Bee Activity: Each hive supports between 20,000 to 80,000 bees, which pollinate crops within a 5-mile radius, benefiting local agriculture.

Tree Planting: Planted trees help to feed the bees, contributing to combating deforestation, climate change, and colony growth.

    Over 60% of the organization's beekeepers are women in a country where only 10% of beekeepers are female.

  • Leadership

    Each of the 32 groups is led by women, fostering leadership, mentoring, and decision-making roles.

  • Breaking Poverty Cycles

    Profits from beekeeping help women keep their children in school longer, creating a positive generational impact.

Honey and Beekeeping Program

Purpose: Fanm Limye Association's beekeeping initiative aims to address the shortage of high-quality beeswax for Fanm Limye’s handmade candles. This program also introduced a new revenue stream with natural honey.

Scale: The program has trained 1,100 beekeepers organized into 32 groups across Haiti.

Production Potential: A single hive can yield approximately 4.25 gallons (51 lbs) of honey and 5.1 lbs of beeswax per year.

Beekeepers can reinvest profits to scale up, potentially growing to 29 whole hives in 10 years.

Candle-Making and Economic Growth

Fanm Limye (Illuminated Women): This cooperative produces artisanal candles using locally sourced beeswax, which aligns with sustainability goals.

Partnership with Fanm Limye Association: The organization provides business and vocational training for women-led artisan businesses, enhancing their sustainability and growth potential.
